The Southeast Volusia Humane Society in New Smyrna Beach is hoping some people will be able to open their homes this holiday season to some four-legged friends in need of a foster family. The shelter looks festive, but it’s still sad with dozens of homeless cats and dogs in confined spaces. That’s why the staff came up with “Home for the Holidays,” an effort to get every animal in a foster home for four days from Dec. 22 to Dec. 26.

Southeast Volusia Humane Society Cats and Kittens are relaxing and enjoying their new room. Their new remodeled room looks really nice with tile and cages. Below you will enjoy seeing the new cat room while shelter employee, Debbie, trims and weighs some of the available cats and kittens.

Hello, everyone! If you weren’t at the Mardi Gras Pet Parade on Canal Street, on Saturday, Feb 7, you missed a great event! Folks, let me tell you, there were dogs of every breed, size, and shape dressed to the top with Mardi Gras attire.

At this kind of a race, the water stations have to include some bowls on the ground. But it’s worth it. Letting a race and a walk go to the dogs means a new tradition to raise money for their four-legged brethren down on their luck.

After pawing through all the excellent Casting Call entries for the part of Indiana Bones in the annual Mutt Strut, the SEVHS panel has finally reached a decision! Our new Indiana Bones will be played by Harlee Collins!

We have partnered with Give Back America to help our organization raise additional funds, all at no extra cost to you the consumer! Give Back America is an online shopping mall created to raise money for local charities. The concept is simple, every time you shop online from your favorite online retailer (ex. Target, Expedia, Amazon, Ebay) a percentage of each purchase goes to your favorite charity.

A big thanks goes out to Concerned Citizens for Animal Welfare for featuring Sophie’s Circle and the Southeast Volusia Humane Society in their current newsletter. Also, thank you to My Bliss Magazine for the full page devoted to Sophie’s Circle in the August issue. The August Yappy Hour was a huge success! The dogs were such a hit and so incredibly well behaved that we want them at all of our future Yappy Hours.

It was passed that Tigershark Endurance Events will be our event coordinator for the first annual 5K Run in January. Tigershark Endurance Events promotes health and fitness with races designed to make every athlete’s racing experience one they want to repeat again and again.

Board president Vicky Fischer, mascot Luv, other board members, staff and friends are pictured at the 2007 Pet Festival when they celebrated the opening of the new kennels. Thanks to the support of generous donors, these kennels will house many dogs before they are ready for adoption. Having these kennels enables SEVHS to accept more dogs for adoption. As the plaque on the front of the building reads, “Our dream came true because of you.”
