Girl Scouts Troop 183 visited the shelter on Monday, March 30, 2009. The girls collected donations for the shelter. Susie, the shelter manager, did a little class with them and spoke about the shelter. They took a tour of the shelter cats and dogs that were available for adoption.

Buddy found us at the Daytona Beach Humane Society in 1995. A young woman came upon a beautiful black and tan British Cocker Spaniel wandering about, and took him home.

Sophie’s Circle is on the move. The monthly Yappy Hour will be changing locations. Sophie would like to ask all of her friends to join her at Boomerangs in Port Orange on February 18th from 5:30 till 7:30.

Paws and Claws dipped in LUV! This issue highlights the Inaugural SEVHS Go Dog Go! 5k and Fun-Run, amazing shelter statistics, an article from the SEVHS president, Vicky Fischer, and well deserved volunteer highlights.

At this kind of a race, the water stations have to include some bowls on the ground. But it’s worth it. Letting a race and a walk go to the dogs means a new tradition to raise money for their four-legged brethren down on their luck.

If you missed Yappy Hour at Hooters you missed a great party! Sophie and all of her friends brought down the house. They came from all around. We had all shapes and sizes of dgs including one dressed up like a lobster. the door prizes were to numerous to mention, but we wold like to say thank yo to all who donated.

On Friday, September 27, 2008, Sebastian was named King of the Court at his high school homecoming! Amongst his other achievements, he was specifically acknowledged for his community service hours at the shelter.

After pawing through all the excellent Casting Call entries for the part of Indiana Bones in the annual Mutt Strut, the SEVHS panel has finally reached a decision! Our new Indiana Bones will be played by Harlee Collins!

Southeast Volusia Humane Society participated in Sheriff Ben Johnson’s Battle of the Badges Family Funfest and Inshore Fishing Tournament at Riverside Park in New Smyrna Beach. The Humane Society had a booth set up both Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, September 21st. People and families of all ages enjoyed meeting the adoptable pets and the pets had a great time too!

We have partnered with Give Back America to help our organization raise additional funds, all at no extra cost to you the consumer! Give Back America is an online shopping mall created to raise money for local charities. The concept is simple, every time you shop online from your favorite online retailer (ex. Target, Expedia, Amazon, Ebay) a percentage of each purchase goes to your favorite charity.

A big thanks goes out to Concerned Citizens for Animal Welfare for featuring Sophie’s Circle and the Southeast Volusia Humane Society in their current newsletter. Also, thank you to My Bliss Magazine for the full page devoted to Sophie’s Circle in the August issue. The August Yappy Hour was a huge success! The dogs were such a hit and so incredibly well behaved that we want them at all of our future Yappy Hours.

Save the date!! November 29, 2008 is Sophie’s Magical Fur Ball. This is going to be our biggest fund raiser of the year and we are hoping to make it an annual event.

One look from Muffin melted the hearts of the McCormicks and that was all it took for the McCormicks to adopt the little cutie.

Oktoberfest 2008 is being held Saturday, October 11, 2008 to benefit Southeast Volusia County Humane Society. Cocktails start at 5:30pm with dinner and dancing at 6:30pm.

It was passed that Tigershark Endurance Events will be our event coordinator for the first annual 5K Run in January. Tigershark Endurance Events promotes health and fitness with races designed to make every athlete’s racing experience one they want to repeat again and again.

We are looking for a compelling canine to play the role of “Indiana Bones” in the 2008 Mutt Strut! The dog chosen as Indiana Bones will be responsible for leading the walk at the Port Orange Family Day’s 3rd Annual Mutt Strut on Saturday, October 4th, 2008. Deadline is September 15th, so hurry and submit your entries today!

Our family is now complete thanks to the staff at the SE Volusia Humane Society. They helped us find the perfect dog for our family and I thank them for that. We will also be attending the free obedience classes on Saturday with both dogs.

I adopted Roxy 07/07/07 and she is doing great! She is so cute and sweet. Roxy loves to play and eat treats.

Monty has found a new home with the Degeorge Family.

The Halifax Veterinary Clinic of Port Orange let the dogs (and cats) out Saturday, June 14, during a fundraising event for the Southeast Volusia Humane Society. Activities included contests, games, adoption booths and agility demonstrations. Visitors were able to buy raffle tickets for prizes and enter their canines in a variety of contests.

The Southeast Volusia Humane Society 17th Annual Festival for Pets was held on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 1200 S. Glencoe Road in New Smyrna Beach. Many people arrived with their pets ready for the contests and festivities. SEVHS is proud to hold yet another successful Festival for Pets!

The SEVHS celebrates 50 years (1958-2008) of animal rescue! In this issue read about Recent Happenings, Future Events and a call for all volunteers to help with the new kennels opening.

Board president Vicky Fischer, mascot Luv, other board members, staff and friends are pictured at the 2007 Pet Festival when they celebrated the opening of the new kennels. Thanks to the support of generous donors, these kennels will house many dogs before they are ready for adoption. Having these kennels enables SEVHS to accept more dogs for adoption. As the plaque on the front of the building reads, “Our dream came true because of you.”
