Are You Ready For A Pet?

Congratulations on your desire to adopt a pet, a loyal companion who will share your life (and heart) with you and your family. Because this is such an important commitment, we ask that you consider the following to help you decide if your family is ready to bring that loveable, furry friend home with you!

Time

One of the biggest considerations facing potential pet owners is the time factor. Take a moment to think about the amount of time you have to devote to a pet – and the responsibilities that come with it. In all fairness, dogs and cats need lots of time spent with them….training, veterinarian visits, housebreaking, socialization, and more are all part of being a conscientious pet owner, and these responsibilities take time.

Expense

Although those little puppy dog eyes and kitten noses may be irresistible, it’s important to keep in mind that your puppy or kitten will grow up to be a dog or a cat someday – and can live up to 15 years or more! And with that growth (and life expectancy!) comes several expenses, including physicals and vaccinations, licensing, heartworm/flea prevention, housing, and food for your pet. Even if you adopt an older dog or cat, there may be unexpected medical expenses that come with owning an older animal. Please keep these expenses in mind as you consider the future with your furry companion.

The Responsible Pet Owner

A responsible pet owner is committed to ensuring the wellbeing and health of their pet at all times and considers the importance of the following in providing a high quality of life for their cat or dog.

A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER MAKES SURE THEIR PETS:

  • Are spayed or neutered
  • Have yearly vaccinations
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Have daily love and attention
  • Live in a safe environment and are not allowed to stray
  • Are properly trained and socialized
  • Wear proper identification tags
  • Consider the new pet’s suitability for children/other pets in the home
  • Are financially provided for, especially in an emergency

Please continue to keep in mind that the decision to care for a pet should not be taken lightly. A decision to adopt an animal from our shelter should include the above considerations and ultimately result in a lifelong commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of your pet.
